For the month of April the wonderful people at Z Tejas in the Gateway are helping Matt by donating part of the proceeds from the sale of a delicious shrimp appetizer. Ask your waiter about Matt and they will lead you to the right selection. So go get some great food and help Matt, Brooke and Reagan at the same time! It's a great deal!
Matt has spent 3 months in the hospital and almost 4 months at his father in-laws. They are so grateful that they had somewhere to go when he was released, but the house is not handicap accessible. Their bedroom is upstairs, which means four transfers from the car to the bed. The bathroom door won't shut with a wheelchair in there. Matt can't reach the kitchen sink, the stove, can't get in the fridge, and Reagan sleeps in the den to name few of the inconveniences. But one of the worst things is Ella (their dog) is not living with them. They are understandably very homesick. We need all of you to help get this little family back together and in their own home!
If you would like to work on the "Lund Home Make Over" Please call Travis Grob @ 694-7583 or Brooke @ 433-8760. Let them know when you can show up, with tools and gloves if possible, to help move this project ahead!

After spending some time at Neuroworx riding an electric stimulation bike on April 3rd, Matt and I headed to Mulligan's golf course and driving range just a few blocks away. Dan, a rehab and home health nurse and his infant son, Luke joined us at the golf range. Matt wanted to try hitting some golf balls with two clubs and an arm-club support device created by Rick, another friend with a spinal cord injury. Matt's first shot resulted in the club flying almost further than the ball. As we got better with setting up the club, Matt began hitting each shot firmly with the use of only his right arm. The sound and feel of smacking the golf ball again, although not nearly as far as he had done prior to the injury, was a great experience. We had some good laughs and it was nice to see the determination on Matt's face to continue doing things he has always enjoyed. One arm golf is not easy, but Matt will be taking some lessons and learn how to return to playing golf later this summer with the help of Project GAIN, a local project with national ties that helps injured golfers return to the sport.

Lots of demolition work has been done on Matt and Brooke's house. This project is being spearheaded by Travis Grob. With the help of volunteers, (Please give Travis a call and see what you can do to help 801-694-7583) things are almost ready to start on the re-building phase. Here are some photos as of Saturday. Those of you who have been to the house in the good ol days will feel the pain.
the trip to vegas was a blast and a great escape from our crazy lives but the last two weeks has been back to hard work.
Check out the crawling pics.
Matt
We decided we were due for some good fortune so we packed the
family wagon, persuaded my sister to come and babysit and headed to
vegas last weekend. We were not the only people with this idea when we
arrived we discoverd the NBA allstar game was the same weekend and with
it come all of the fans. After crusin the strip Sat. we finally got back
to the room ordered room service vowed to not leave the hotel for the
rest of the weekend and went to bed at 9:00.Sun. it was 80 degrees and
we just lounged by the pool went out to lunch and went out to see a
show that night. It was a much more relaxing day. The bottom line for
me was that it didn't matter what we did, it was off our routine! It
was somewhat daring to drive the 7 hrs. and to do all of Matt's care
in a hotel only 5 mo. after his injury but I am so glad that we
did. We have always been adventerous together and that is one thing I
will not give up.
We have added more photos of Matt participating in a weekly handcycling class sponsored by the TRAILS program (at the U of U) and Neuroworx and also some photos of Matt doing a water therapy session. Matt usually has a hydortherapy session twice a week for roughly one hour each session. During each session he spends approximately 25-30 minutes of uninterrupted swimming using three different types of backstrokes. He also does several different types of exercises with different objects that help develop strength, balance and coordination. The photos show Matt being raised on a lift to enter the therapy pool, some of the exercises and then leaving the water. The unusual picture of Matt's legs underwater on a monitor shows how the therapist can also observe underwater movements during a therapy session. The therapy pool at Neuroworx offers some good variety in workouts and facilitates recovery. Sorry that the finish photo of the therapy session is the one shown first in the sequence. The other photos show Matt at the Saturday morning session of the handcycling class. About 15 people with various spinal cord injuries particiapte for nearly 60 minutes on the handcycles with loud music in the background and a demanding instructor providing motivation. These sessions create good cardio and muscle development and enhance the friendships being formed. Hope you enjoy the photos even though Matt is growing weary of me taking them.

Check out the new photos of Matt doing a weight training workout at Neuroworx. Included are two photos of Matt in a device that allows Matt to be in a standing position to help with cirulation. Matt stands for 8 minutes then goes back to a sitting position and then back to standing for 8 minutes. He repeats this process for 30-60 minutes. Matt's facial expressions show that he works hard and enjoys looking at magazines while standing.
